How To Work Viewers In The First 3 Seconds

Winning The First Three Seconds

The Scroll Decides Fast

On short-form platforms a viewer decides in a moment whether to keep watching. If the opening frame does not give them a reason to stay, the rest of the video, however good, will never be seen.

Lead With The Payoff

Show the result first: the finished look, the surprising number, the moment of reaction. Then explain how you got there. Curiosity about the how is what keeps people watching to the end.

Hooks That Work

Ask a question the viewer already has, open with a bold statement, or start in the middle of the action. Movement in the first frame and on-screen text that states the promise both help a video stand out in a crowded feed.

Keep Them Watching

Cut Everything Slow

Remove intros, logos and pauses. Every second should either add information or build anticipation.

Test Several Openings

Film more than one hook for the same video and compare retention. The data will tell you which first line your audience cannot scroll past.
